Terry’s finance work experience

Year 12 student Terry M. gained insight into finance and accounting during his work experience placement at Exchange Court.
Terry, who hopes to become an accountant or banker, spent five days with the busy finance team, learning about their roles, responsibilities and deadlines. During the week, he completed a variety of tasks and was supported by different team members.
He said: ‘It has been brilliant. Everyone has been friendly and I have learned a lot. I have worked with the whole team, but especially George and Nikitha. The biggest thing I have learned is the importance of organisational skills. Everyone has tight deadlines and explained how they manage their day-to-day schedules. To meet everything in an orderly way, they have to be organised to a tee. The days are definitely longer and more structured than school, but because the work is varied, it keeps you engaged and time flies!’
Terry, who has one more year before his A Levels, is now considering university courses and possible apprenticeships. The experience will hopefully stand him in good stead, particularly as he embraced every task, including making drinks for the team — no small undertaking given its size and the variety of tastes involved!
‘When I first arrived, I felt quite nervous because I was a young person entering a room full of expertise. Once I settled in, everyone reassured me that they understood, while still treating me with maturity. It was about finding my place and becoming comfortable in that environment. I will miss everyone; I felt at ease so quickly that I could easily have stayed longer than five days. Everyone has been so kind, welcoming and positive.’
Finance Director Janita Mackin said: 'It was a real pleasure having Terry join our finance team for a week. The team planned and prepped to make sure he had a varied experience, learning all of the different roles and also doing some hands on work too. Terry was a very positive, polite and respectful person but also enjoyed a bit of banter, so fitted in straight away with the gang.
'My thanks to the team for accommodating this experience and taking the time out for Terry, especially George who became is mentor for the week. He has gone away with a far better understanding of the wide variety of career and training opportunities available in the world of finance.'
